Sherry Overholt

Sherry Overholt, soprano has combined a long and successful career with operatic and concert performances in addition to her teaching positions here at Purchase College and at Queens College. She has sung numerous lyric coloratura roles including Gilda, Violetta, Zerlina, Valencienne, Serpina and Marzelline. On the concert stage, Ms. Overholt has appeared as guest soloist with many orchestras including the Chamber Orchestra of New England, Tanglewood Festival Orchestra, Philadelphia Virtuosi and the Baltimore Symphony. In joint operatic recital Ms. Overholt and baritone Lee Velta have sung over 500 concerts with Columbia Artists Community Concerts in addition to singing concerts internationally.

Ms. Overholt premiered the title role in Frank Lewins’ opera Burning Bright, which she subsequently recorded for the Albany record label and she is currently recording Vincent Persichetti’s Harmonium for Winter 2010.

As a private voice teacher in Manhattan and at both colleges her students have been contracted by opera companies and festivals including The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera and Santa Fe Opera and won numerous competitions including the Liederkranz, National Association of Teachers, Jenny Lind Competitions and the Metropolitan Council Awards. She has completed her sixth season as Artistic Director and Voice Teacher for The Westchester Summer Vocal Institute which continues to promote emerging operatic artists. Ms. Overholt received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Miami, and her Masters, Master of Musical Arts and D.M.A. in Vocal Performance from Yale University.
