By admin | January 12, 2011

Derek Greten-Harrison earned his Bachelor of Music from Manhattan School of Music and his Master of Music in opera performance from Purchase College, State University of New York. He is highly sought after for his compelling work both as a baritone and as a countertenor. As a baritone, he has sung the roles of Betto and Spinelloccio in Gianni Schicchi and portrayed Shakespeare’s arch villain Antonio in the New York première production of Lee Hoiby’s The Tempest. Subsequently he was asked to interpret the same role in the highly acclaimed studio recording released by Albany Records. He has also been heard in scenes from Die Zauberflöte, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Il barbiere di Siviglia. Derek’s versatility as an actor and dancer has also led to musical theater performances as Fred/Petruchio in Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate and Harold Hill in Meredith Willson’s The Music Man.

As a countertenor, Derek has been a featured soloist in Handel’s Messiah and As Pants the Hart, Bach’s Magnificat and Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, and Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit de Noël. He is also the founder and artistic director of Etherea Vocal Ensemble, a new chamber group dedicated to the performance of choral repertoire for treble voices from the Romantic era. This group was honored to make its debut in December 2009 as a guest of Lorin Maazel’s Castleton Festival.

In addition to performing, Derek is a published writer who regularly reviews recordings and live performances for Opera News magazine and is currently working on a book about the vocal training and subsequent performing careers of sopranos in the Golden Age of the American Musical.
