Hugh Murphy

Hugh Murphy is a highly respected New York City-based conductor, pianist and vocal coach. Opera productions and recordings that he has conducted have been positively reviewed in The New York Times, Opera News Magazine, Fanfare Magazine, The American Record Guide and by the National Opera Association. His conducting has been praised for it’s musical sensitivity and attention to detail, and featured on-line by PBS and Channel 13’s Sunday Arts Weekly Showcase.

Mr. Murphy has conducted all six Purchase Opera productions named “Best Opera of the Year” by the National Opera Association. These operas include works from the 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Mr. Murphy is co-founder and Musical Director of Apollo’s Banquet, an ensemble that presents concerts and gives residencies and master classes of eighteenth-century dance and music here in United States as well as abroad. The New York Times has called their concerts “sophisticated and beguiling”.
Mr. Murphy recently conducted the world premiere recording of Lee Hoiby’s The Tempest (Albany Records). This recording has received rave reviews from some of the most highly regarded print and online media. This spring he will lead the Purchase Opera and Purchase Symphony Orchestra in a recording of Raphaël Lucas’ Confession, a one-act prequel to Puccini’s Suor Angelica that was conceived, written, developed, and staged at Purchase College.
Mr. Murphy coaches professional classical vocal artists who appear with the world’s leading conductors, orchestras and opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera of New York, the Royal Opera at Covent Garden, the Paris Opéra, and the Bayerische Staatsoper. He has also held coaching positions with the Santa Fe and Wildwood Opera companies. For the past several years he has been a member the esteemed coaching staff of “Si Parla, Si Canta” a Summer Vocal Workshop in Italy. He has served on the faculty of the New School’s Mannes College of Music in New York, and as a Visiting Professor at the Eastman School of Music.
His first love is art song, and Mr. Murphy appears as a collaborative pianist throughout the U.S. and abroad. He is an adjudicator of the prestigious Leider Competition sponsored yearly by the Liederkranz Society of New York.
Mr. Murphy is a tenured Professor of Music, and a co-founder of the innovative and highly successful Opera Performance/Vocal Studies program at Purchase College, State University of New York where he coaches and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in German and French Art Song, Operatic Literature and Styles.
